Gangotri Temple: Built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa, this temple lies on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River and is located at an altitude of 3,100mts. The Gangotri Temple is the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is one of the four Chota Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. Hence, pilgrims from diverse parts of India and beyond go on a travel to Gangotri. The serene, white Gangotri Temple is surrounded by Deodar and pines and the Greater Himalayan Range. The holy river Bhagirathi, which is one of the two head-streams of Ganga, flows alongside this Temple. The Gangotri temple additionally lies pretty close to the holy rock or the Bhagirath Shila where King Bhagirath had worshipped Lord Shiva. Shakti Temple: Lying just opposite the Vishwanath temple, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Maa Shakti is represented at the temple in the form of a giant Trishul or trident. This Trishul is considered to be more than 1500 years old. This massive Trishul is 6-metres-high. As per the legends, Goddess Durga or Shakti had aimed this Trishul to slaughter the devils, making it a popular Gangotri tourism spot.
Best Time to Visit Gangotri
Gangotri stays open every year for six months from May to November. The ideal time to plan your trip to Gangotri would be from May-June and September-October. The weather here would be quite pleasant during this time. Gangotri is fairly cold throughout the year, so you must remember to carry warm clothes with you when going on a Gangotri trip.
