Known as Hiroshima Heiwa Kinen Kōen in Japanese, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a tribute to the victims of the world’s first nuclear attack in 1945. And this is usually the first stop on any Hiroshima day trip. The park grounds include the Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph, Flame of Peace, and the Atom Bomb Dome. The Atom Bomb Dome houses the ruins of the old Chamber of Industry and Commerce, which was the centre-point of the atomic bombing. The memorial is not the only attraction here however, you can also bask in the shade of the stunning cherry blossom trees of the gardens that revive your spirit with their beauty and eternal optimism.

The Hiroshima Castle or Rijō has an amazing story related to it. This castle, built-in 1593, was originally the residence of a Japanese noble - Fukushima Masanori. It later came into the possession of the famous samurai Asano Nagaakira in 1619. The spectacular architecture of this castle captivates the visitors and the views from here are unparalleled. Enjoy breathtaking views of the harbour, the bustling city, and Miyakojima Island from the top floor of the building. Legend has it that the three famous trees on the palace grounds survived the nuclear holocaust. The castle is at its majestic best at night when it is beautifully illuminated.

The Japanese people are deeply religious, and the Itsukushima Shrine is a spectacular example of Shinto devotion. Located on the island of Miyajima, it is dedicated to the Princesses Ichikishimahime, Tagorihime, and Tagitsu-hime, daughters of the Shinto wind god Susanoo. The beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site increases manifolds as the structure seems to float on the waters. Do not miss the striking Honden which is the main hall, the Offerings Hall, the Hall of a Thousand Mats, and the Prayer Hall. Apart from the shrine, take time to embrace the exquisite beauty of the island itself which is one of Japan’s most important and visited sites. This temple is a must-visit destination whenever you are in Hiroshima.

This landscaped garden is like no other as there are so many landscape variations that are found here. Loosely translated into English, Shukkeien means 'shrunken-scenery garden'. This 17th-century garden, constructed in the Edo period, is a stellar example of the precision and landscaping wizardry of the Japanese. Take a leisurely stroll on the garden pathway, enjoy the many miniaturized sceneries and end the visit with a traditional Japanese tea at the many tea houses here, while you enjoy the natural charm of this place.

This 17th-century castle was built by the feudal Lord Mizuno Katsunar and is considered to be a prominent example of Edo era architecture. During the atomic bombing, many parts of the castle were destroyed but were later restored to match its former glory. The Fukuyama Castle Museum exhibits important relics and artefacts of the successive feudal lords of the region.

Head over to the party district of Nagarekawa for a night on the town as you sip on the famous Japanese drink, Sake. This area is known for its beer gardens, Izakayas (casual Japanese style pubs), many bars, and nightclubs. Indulge in the fresh local seafood produce, especially oysters, scrumptious sushi, yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and the delicious maple leaf-shaped sweet cakes called Momijimanju.
