Places to Visit in Mahabalipuram
During your Mahabalipuram tour, there are enormous things to do. Let’s quickly take a sneak peek at the highly preferred places to visit in Mahabalipuram: -
Shore Temple
Dating back to the 7th century, the Shore Temple stands as one of the ancient South Indian temples, showcasing the distinctive Dravidian architectural style and reflecting the regal elegance of the Pallava dynasty. You must visit this temple during your trip as it is notable in India's cultural heritage and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Perched on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, it offers a picturesque setting that has made it a favourite topic for countless photographs.
Pancha Ratha
Your trip will be complete if you visit Panch Ratna. The Pancha Ratha is a collection of five distinct monuments, each known as a "Ratha" named after the Pandavas and their family. These monuments include the Dharmaraja Ratha, Bheem Ratha, Arjun Ratha, Nakul Sahdev Ratha, and Draupadi Ratha. Along with the Shore Temple and Arjuna's Penance, these structures are recognized as UNESCO world heritage sites. Exploring these remarkable monuments is a must-do when visiting Mahabalipuram. If you share a fascination with UNESCO world heritage sites, they will also captivate your interest.
Krishna’s Butterball
Just a short 7-minute walk from the Pancha Ratha, you'll come across Krishna's Butterball, a remarkable sight. It features a large stone that is incredibly balanced on an incline, making it a favourite subject for snapshots. This single boulder, known as Krishna's Butterball, weighs a staggering 250 tons. Adjacent to this impressive stone, you'll find other stones in unique shapes and natural caves formed by the arrangement of massive rocks. The area surrounding Krishna's Butterball has been transformed into a pleasant picnic and tourist spot, adorned with well-maintained lawns, stone markers, and sculptures.
Krishna's Butterball holds fascinating stories that add to its intrigue. Legend has it that during the reign of the Pallava kings, one attempted to relocate the stone but failed as it remained immovable. Centuries later, a regional governor made another ambitious attempt, employing seven elephants to move the boulder, yet it still resisted any efforts to be shifted! The name of the stone is derived from its resemblance to a butterball, a favourite snack of Lord Krishna. Undoubtedly, Krishna's Butterball is a special attraction to experience in Mahabalipuram.
Arjuna’s Penance
Adjacent to Krishna's Butterball, you'll find Arjuna's Penance, a site known for its remarkable wall carvings. Alongside the sculptures, there is also a temple chamber. These intricate carvings portray scenes from the epic Mahabharata. Notably, the twin-stone boulders here depict the legendary descent of the river Ganga to Earth under the guidance of Bagiratha. Among the carvings, the elephant sculpture at Arjuna's Penance is widely regarded as one of the finest stone carvings in India, resembling a life-sized elephant. In total, there are approximately 146 carvings on this magnificent monument.
Mahabalipuram Beach
This beach is one of India's longest beaches, stretching along a shoreline of nearly 20 k. It is famous for its pristine golden sands and captivating azure waters. Along the shore, you will see many awe-inspiring sights worth the cost of visiting Mahabalipuram.
Best Time to Visit Mahabalipuram

The peak tourism season in Mahabalipuram occurs from November to February when the climate is delightful.
