The area is surrounded by Chikmagalur district to its north-west, Chitradurga district to the north, Tumkur district to the east, Mandya to its south-east, Mysore to its south, Kodagu in the south-west, and Dakshin Kannada in the west. Hassan is elevated at an average height of 3,084 feet i.e. 940 m above the sea level.
