Turkey - On your bucketlist?

7 mins. read

I was in Turkey last year, and to me, Turkey, where East meets West, is a land that invites adventurers, history enthusiasts, and culture seekers alike. From the bustling streets of Istanbul to the serene landscapes of Cappadocia, Turkey offers a rich variety of experiences. So today, I want to tell you why Turkey should be at the top of your bucket list.

As if that weren’t enticing enough, at Veena World, we have recently launched two new tours to Turkey: Women’s Special Turkey and All of Turkey, in addition to the popular Highlights of Turkey tour. These tours feature departures both this year and next year, offering even more ways for you to Celebrate Life in Turkey. But you may ask, why Turkey? So let’s find out why!

Why Turkey?

Turkey’s charm lies in its diversity. Whether you are exploring ancient ruins, soaring in a hot air balloon, or experiencing the spiritual aura of the whirling dervishes, every corner of this country reveals something extraordinary. This is a place where you can walk through the remnants of the Roman Empire one day and be mesmerized by Ottoman grandeur the next. From historical landmarks to natural wonders, Turkey is the perfect place to immerse yourself in centuries of culture, all while enjoying the warm hospitality and unforgettable flavors of Turkish cuisine.

The Historical Marvels of Turkey

History is deeply ingrained in Turkey’s identity. This is where civilizations thrived, empires rose and fell, and architectural wonders were built that still captivate visitors today.

Trojan Horse Statue (Troy)

In the northwest of Turkey, near the Dardanelles, lies the ancient city of Troy, made famous by Homer’s Iliad. The Trojan Horse statue at the entrance serves as a reminder of one of the most famous legends of all time. The site itself is a treasure trove of archaeological layers, where you can explore remnants of ancient civilizations dating back over 4,000 years.

Temple of Augustus and Rome (Ankara)

Located in the heart of Ankara, the Temple of Augustus and Rome is a window into the Roman era. Built in honour of the first Roman emperor, Augustus, this well-preserved monument offers insight into the ancient world and the spread of Roman influence in Anatolia. The inscriptions on its walls, known as the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, tell the tale of the emperor's deeds and mark a pivotal moment in history.

Ephesus (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

The ancient city of Ephesus, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most magnificent archaeological sites in the world. Once a thriving hub of trade and culture, Ephesus is home to the famed Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Walking through its ruins, including the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, is like stepping back into history.

Unforgettable Cultural Experiences

Turkey isn’t just about its history; it’s a country rich in culture and traditions that can be experienced in unique and memorable ways.

Whirling Dervish Show

One of the most mesmerizing spiritual performances in Turkey is the Whirling Dervish ceremony. Rooted in Sufi mysticism, this ancient ritual sees dancers spinning in circles, symbolizing a spiritual journey towards divine love and enlightenment. It’s a performance that transcends the ordinary and offers visitors a deeper understanding of Turkey’s spiritual heritage.

Turkish Dinner with a Show

There’s no better way to wrap up a day in Turkey than by indulging in a traditional Turkish dinner while enjoying an entertaining cultural show. Savour the rich flavours of dishes like lamb kebabs, mezes, and baklava while watching performances that include folk dancing and live music, offering a delightful window into Turkish customs and celebrations.

Natural Wonders and Scenic Landscapes

Turkey’s diverse landscape is as breathtaking as its history, with some natural sights that seem almost too surreal to be true.

Hot Air Balloon Tour Over Cappadocia

Cappadocia is like no other place on earth, with its fairy-tale chimneys, ancient cave dwellings, and unique rock formations. But it’s the view from above that truly captivates travelers. A hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia at sunrise is a bucket-list experience, offering spectacular vistas of the ethereal landscape below. Floating silently over valleys and ancient towns, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported into a magical world.

Pamukkale (Cotton Castle)

The Cotton Castle, or Pamukkale, is a natural wonder that feels like it belongs on another planet. The brilliant white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich hot springs have been a spa destination for millennia. Visitors can walk along the terraces, bathe in the warm, healing waters, and marvel at the surreal beauty of this UNESCO site.

Architectural Gems and the Splendors of Istanbul

Turkey’s iconic architecture is as diverse as its landscape, from ancient castles to grand palaces.

Topkapi Palace (Istanbul)

Once the heart of the Ottoman Empire, Topkapi Palace in Istanbul is a lavish example of imperial architecture. It’s filled with treasures that speak of centuries of power and wealth, from the sultan’s ornate chambers to the famed Harem. Visitors can immerse themselves in the opulence of this historical palace, learning about the sultans and their extravagant lifestyles.

Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque)

Another must-see in Istanbul is the Blue Mosque, known for its breathtaking interior lined with over 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. This grand mosque is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a functioning place of worship, blending spiritual and artistic significance.

Bodrum Castle (Bodrum)

For those exploring the coastal beauty of Turkey, Bodrum Castle offers a fascinating mix of history and stunning sea views. This medieval fortress, built by the Knights Hospitaller, now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, giving visitors a chance to explore Turkey’s maritime past.

Bosphorus Strait and Princes' Islands

Finally, no visit to Istanbul is complete without a cruise along the Bosphorus Strait. This waterway, dividing Europe and Asia, offers spectacular views of Istanbul’s skyline, including palaces, mosques, and bridges. For a more tranquil experience, take a ferry to the Princes' Islands, where time seems to slow down. These car-free islands are perfect for biking, walking, and soaking in the serene atmosphere.

All in all, Turkey’s unique blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and architectural marvels makes it a top destination for travellers of all interests. Whether you’re drawn by its ancient ruins, mystical traditions, or stunning landscapes, Turkey promises an adventure unlike any other. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder that Turkey is a place that lingers in the heart long after the journey ends.
