So, where do we start?
Every time I open a world map, I find myself amazed by how some countries are tiny specks while others stretch across vast portions of the globe. The United States of America is one such country—huge, diverse, and packed with experiences that could take a lifetime to explore.
Since the USA is nearly three times the size of India, planning a trip can feel overwhelming. But the best part? With a ten-year U.S. visa, we can take our time and explore it region by region: the East Coast, West Coast, National Parks, Midwest, Southern states, Hawaiian Islands, and even the remote wilderness of Alaska.
For me, the perfect place to begin is the East Coast—home to some of the most iconic cities, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. And of course, what better way to start than in the city that never sleeps—New York!
New York City – A City of Endless Energy
New York. The Big Apple. Just hearing the name brings to mind skyscrapers touching the sky, bustling streets, and the dazzling lights of Times Square. But did you know that New York was originally called New Amsterdam? The Dutch were the first European settlers here, building a wall around their colony, giving birth to today’s famous Wall Street. When the British later took control, they renamed it New York after their own city back home.
New York has an energy that reminds me so much of Mumbai—fast, exciting, and full of life. The perfect place to witness this? Times Square. I remember one particular night when we lost track of time completely—just wandering around, mesmerized by the flashing neon billboards and bustling crowds. It was past 1 AM when hunger finally hit us, and to our delight, we found food carts lined up, serving everything from classic New York hot dogs to shawarmas and even Indian-style kathi rolls. A city that never sleeps indeed!
A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without visiting the Statue of Liberty—or as she is officially called, Liberty Enlightening the World. Designed by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the same genius behind the Eiffel Tower), the statue has turned green due to oxidation over the years. The best way to see her? Taking a ferry to Ellis Island, where you can snap some truly Instagram-worthy pictures with Lady Liberty in the background.
One of my absolute favorite New York experiences was having brunch at Tavern on the Green—a charming restaurant inside Central Park. Sitting there on a crisp morning, enjoying a delightful meal with a view of the lush greenery, I almost forgot that I was in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world! After brunch, we took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park, feeling like we had stepped straight into a romantic Hollywood movie.
Another highlight? Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. You might recognize it from Bollywood movies, especially that famous Shah Rukh Khan song! And of course, there's Broadway, the entertainment heart of New York, where I was lucky enough to catch a live show—an experience I highly recommend.
After soaking in all that New York has to offer, it’s time for a change of pace—a trip to one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in North America!
Niagara Falls – A Spectacle of Nature
The first time I saw Niagara Falls, I was completely speechless. No matter how many pictures or videos you’ve seen, nothing prepares you for the sheer power, roar, and mist of the falls up close.
While the view from a distance is impressive, I wanted to get even closer to the action—so I hopped on the Maid of the Mist boat ride. As we approached the Horseshoe Falls, I could feel the water spray on my face, hear the thunderous roar, and sense the sheer force of nature all around me. Even with a poncho, I got completely drenched—but it was totally worth it!
One of the most thrilling moments of my trip? Taking a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls! Seeing the falls from above, watching the massive cascades of water plunging into the river below, was an absolutely surreal experience. If you're ever in Niagara, this is a must-do—the views are nothing short of breathtaking.
And then there was the nighttime experience. As the sun set, the falls were illuminated in vibrant colors—shades of blue, red, purple, and green, creating a magical, dreamlike atmosphere. Standing there, watching the illuminated falls with the sound of rushing water in the background, I felt an overwhelming sense of awe and gratitude.
From Niagara, we had two options—fly to Washington, D.C., from Buffalo or take a road trip through Pennsylvania, stopping by Hershey (yes, the home of Hershey’s chocolates!) before reaching the capital city of the USA.
Washington, D.C. – The Heart of American History
Welcome to Washington, D.C., the city of monuments, history, and grandeur. (And just to clarify—this is not Washington State, which is on the West Coast!)
One of the best times to visit D.C. is during the Cherry Blossom Festival in spring. Did you know that these beautiful cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912? Walking along the Tidal Basin, surrounded by thousands of pink and white blossoms, felt like stepping into a fairytale. And those who visit Washington DC around Aprila re lucky enough to witness this!
Of course, D.C. is also packed with historical landmarks that you simply can't miss:
- The White House – The residence of the U.S. President.
- The U.S. Capitol – The stunning building where Congress meets.
- The National Mall – A massive area filled with iconic memorials, including:
-
- The Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
- The Washington Monument is a towering tribute to the first U.S. president.
- The Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to one of the Founding Fathers.
If you love museums, the Smithsonian Institution is a dream come true—and most of them are free! My personal favourite? The National Air and Space Museum, where I got to see real spacecraft and even touch a moon rock!
Before leaving, I explored Georgetown, a charming neighbourhood with cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and amazing cupcakes—the perfect way to end a trip to D.C.!
From the bright lights of New York to the roaring power of Niagara Falls, and the historic streets of Washington, D.C., the East Coast of the USA is a perfect blend of adventure, history, and natural beauty. Once you've enjoyed the East Coast to your heart's fill we can start planning tours to other areas of the US!
