Switzerland is one of the most beautiful places on earth that is home to several shimmering lakes, medieval towns, high peaks, and the highest mountain range in all of Europe (The Alps). All of this together with a plethora of breathtaking places makes Switzerland a top-notch travel destination for every traveller. But this time when you buy a Switzerland tour package, don’t restrict your trip to just sightseeing; make sure to spare a day or two for the thrilling and impressive journey to Jungfraujoch. Nicknamed as “Top of Europe”, this place is a heaven for adventure junkies and nature lovers. Perching at a height of 3,454 metres, Jungfraujoch is one of the highest tourist destinations of the continent.
The highlights of this place include the Aletsch Glacier, Jungfraujoch Railway Station, hiking hut-to-hut and the popular Ice Palace. Jungfraujoch is one of those spots of Switzerland that is overlooked by most travellers. This Bernese Alps’ summit unites the magnificent backdrop of ice and rocks with the awe-inspiring sights spread all over. The weather of Jungfraujoch, not surprisingly, is on the colder side throughout the year. So if you are planning on visiting here during your Swiss trip then do pack a good number of warmers.
Here is a well-versed list of places that you should not miss out on your trip to this destination: -
1. Sphinx Observatory
If the term ’unbelievably beautiful’ feels exaggerated, then the Sphinx Observatory is going to change that perception. Located at a height of 3571 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest observation decks in the entire world. Sphinx Astronomical Observatory of Jungfraujoch is a tourist place and also the international research centre. During your trip to Jungfraujoch, this is going to be one of the best places to visit. Wherever you’ll turn, you’ll see ice; it is never-ending!
On a clear day, the sight of the entire glacier that’s spread over 22 kilometres is eye-arresting as the snow sparkles when the sunlight falls upon it. You don’t have to trek to reach here. All you need to do is take the fast elevator that ascends at a speed of 108 metres in 25 seconds and you will reach the summit in no time.
2. Ice Palace
You must have heard the phrase, “the more transient a thing is, the better it looks”. The Ice Palace completely justifies this phrase. In the centre of Jungfraujoch, the mountain guides created rooms and halls that are not a part of this palace. The building process of this palace started in the 1930s by the guides and they used saws and picks to create these. This place is probably one of the best places to visit in Switzerland for honeymoon couples as it is unique and stunning in equal measure.
Once you enter the palace, you walk on ice through the ice tunnel under a thick glacier with a beautiful effigy on both sides. Impressive, isn’t it? Also, you can never be certain about the line-up that’s showcased inside the palace as they keep changing the exposition. The last time we went there, we saw a Scrat stuck in the ice from the Ice Age movie. Click the pictures of the best statue because if you take the second trip here they might not be at their spot.
3. Jungfraujoch Railway Journey
Taking a train journey in Europe is always going to be blissful as you go through beautiful landscapes and astonishing parks while completing any journey in the entire continent. But when it comes to taking a train journey in Switzerland, nothing can be as breathtaking as the train route of Jungfraujoch. The Jungfraujoch train is one of the major attractions of this place. The journey starts from the lower point of Jungfraujoch and ends at approximately 3454 metres high above the sea level at the summit. Excited yet?!
4. Relish the popular Lindt Swiss chocolate
Did you really think that Jungfraujoch is all about ice, rock, and chilly winds? If yes, then you are in for a delectable surprise as this place is famous for world-class chocolate as well. In fact, in all the places to visit in Switzerland, you will find one thing common - Swiss Chocolate. Lindt Swiss Heaven is an extremely popular chocolate shop in town which is famous for smoothing the best chocolate here. We wouldn’t blame you if you are drooling already. Trust us, it is really fun to see such a shop at the top of Europe, Switzerland.
5. Snow Fun Park
Why should adults have all the fun? The Snow Fun Park of Jungfraujoch is opened between May and October and is a real treat especially for youngsters and little ones thanks to the activities you can do here. For the remainder of the year, Jungfraujoch becomes a skiing destination for the rest of the year. Due to the height at which Jungfraujoch is situated, the months between October and May witness a heavy snowfall making it difficult for the park to open. So, if you are planning a family trip here, keep in mind these months and let your kids have fun!
Have your itinerary planned well in advance and also check the prices of tickets for Jungfraujoch before booking. This, in its true glory, is a vantage point in Europe like no other!
