Dekho Apna Desh
Dil se! Pyaar se! Samman se!
When you look at the map of India, you’ll notice tiny islands scattered in the Indian Ocean, a little off the coastline. These are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands—often referred to as paradise in the Bay of Bengal. The small size of these islands on the map does not do justice to their breath-taking beauty in reality.
However, when we think of the Andamans, the first things that come to mind are the great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, the infamous Cellular Jail, and the harsh ‘Kala Pani’ punishment he endured. Today, the Cellular Jail offers a captivating Light and Sound Show that takes visitors back in time.
The pristine Radhanagar, Elephant, and Kala Pathar beaches are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and soft white sands. Havelock and Neil Islands are hotspots for underwater adventures, featuring vibrant coral reefs. Here, you can indulge in thrilling activities like scuba diving and snorkelling. At Havelock, you can even witness the rare natural phenomenon of bioluminescence, where the ocean glows magically at night.
If you wish to explore limestone caves, historical ruins, and exhilarating water sports, then Baratang, Ross, and North Bay Islands are a must-visit. Accommodation options in the Andamans cater to all preferences, from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly hotels.
To enhance your relaxation, you can unwind with spa therapy, beachfront yoga, or simply soak in the tranquil seaside atmosphere. And when it comes to food, fresh seafood is a must! Enjoy a delectable spread of freshly caught fish, lobsters, and crabs, along with special coconut-based delicacies unique to the region.
For thrill-seekers, the islands offer a variety of adventure sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, sea walking, and kayaking in crystal-clear waters.
Whether it’s summer or winter, Andaman is an all-season destination that you can visit anytime and explore its wonders. So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable island getaway!
Oh! I didn’t know this…
Italy, a country that mesmerizes with its natural and man-made wonders, is home to Sicily, an island located off its southern coast. Officially a part of the Italian Republic, Sicily enjoys a special autonomous status within Italy.
One of Sicily’s fascinating locations is Savoca, in the Corleone region, famous for its Hollywood connection. This picturesque town gained global recognition as a filming location for the legendary movie The Godfather. The iconic Bar Vitelli, featured in the film, still stands today, preserving the essence of the cinematic masterpiece. Tourists are drawn to its rustic charm and timeless appeal.
Another must-visit spot here is San Nicolo Church, a medieval church where the wedding scene of Michael Corleone and Apollonia was filmed in The Godfather. Additionally, Sicily is home to the Capuchin Monastery, built in 1954. This historic site once served as a centre for aristocratic education and a hub for liberal arts. The monastery houses over 300 mummified remains of Sicilian nobility from the 18th century, offering a haunting yet fascinating glimpse into the past.
As you wander through Savoca’s winding alleys, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Ionian Coast and Mount Etna. A visit to Santa Maria Church, recognized as an Italian national monument, is also a must for history and architecture lovers.
Near Savoca lies another hidden gem worth exploring—Forza d'Agrò. Nestled between Messina and Catania, this medieval village remains one of Sicily’s best-kept secrets. Not far from Taormina, Forza d'Agrò was another key filming location for The Godfather trilogy, with scenes from The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III shot here.
The village is home to the stunning Santissima Trinità Church, a Baroque-style architectural marvel set against a breath-taking natural backdrop. Visitors can also explore the ruins of a Norman castle, offering a glimpse into Sicily’s medieval past. One of the best experiences here is relaxing at Piazza Giovanni XXIII, where you can soak in stunning sea views while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Forza d'Agrò boasts traditional Sicilian-style houses, scenic landscapes, and a deep-rooted cultural heritage. The village continues to preserve its ancient traditions and religious festivals, making it a charming escape into Sicily’s past.
Both Savoca and Forza d'Agrò are featured in our "All of Italy" and "Tunisia-Malta-Sicily" tours. So, if you’re eager to experience these offbeat destinations, pack your bags and set off on an unforgettable adventure!
A Journey Beyond Imagination
I am Mukund Vaidya, a resident of Pune. In 2017, I took my first foreign tour with Veena World. Today, I am 73 years old, which means I was around 65 at that time. Due to certain circumstances, I had started experiencing loneliness in life. The same daily routine, the same thoughts—it all felt repetitive. So, as a break, I decided to travel to America with Veena World for the first time. And to be honest, that trip helped me leave my loneliness behind.
Before that, I used to travel too, but with other tour operators, I had to find a room partner every time. It wasn’t always possible to find someone to accompany me, so I often had to postpone my trips. But Veena World solved this issue by providing a room partner, allowing me to book tours without any hesitation. Now, I confidently book solo tours. I usually book my tours at their Bhandarkar Road office in Pune and choose the Mumbai to Mumbai option.
So far, I have traveled on 12-13 tours with Veena World. Some of my international trips include: East & West America, Australia - New Zealand, Bhutan. And within India, I have explored: Leh-Ladakh-Kargil, Rajasthan (Mewar & Marwar), Gujarat (Statue of Unity), Pondicherry – Kanchipuram, Bhubaneswar – Puri, Sikkim - Darjeeling – Gangtok, Assam - Meghalaya
I always choose Seniors’ Special tours because traveling with people of my age group makes conversations more enjoyable, walking speeds match, and I never feel like an odd man out. If I travel abroad, I take one or two trips a year, whereas within India, I explore 3-4 destinations annually.
During my America and Australia tours, I even experienced a helicopter ride. In Bhutan, I completed a 12 km trek and even tried river rafting. My Leh-Ladakh trip took me to 16,000 feet altitude. At first, I was concerned about oxygen levels and cold weather, but seeing so many senior citizens like me gave me confidence.
Another thing I truly appreciate is the well-planned meals—even on international trips. A perfect blend of Indian food and local flavours ensures that I never feel out of place in a foreign country. Plus, tour managers handle everything so warmly and efficiently that we never feel lost or uncomfortable.
This year, I had planned to visit Japan, but unfortunately, my passport expired, so I had to postpone the trip. I renewed it in January and just last week, I completed my Bhutan tour.
Now, my travel bucket list includes Nepal, Vietnam, Bali, Japan, South Africa, Egypt, A second trip to America!
As long as I can travel, I want to see as much of the world as possible! Through all these tours, I have met more than 300 people, some of whom I still keep in touch with. Many of us, especially those from Pune, meet up occasionally.
When I’m on a tour, I never think about home. It feels like I’m living in an entirely different world. And even before returning home, my mind is already planning the next trip!
There is a vast world beyond our little bubble, and I strongly believe that everyone should travel at least to get a glimpse of it.
