13 Pink Lakes in the World That Are Definitely Worth Visiting

8 mins. read

Mother Nature has given us so many wonderful gifts that it is almost impossible to see all of them in one lifetime! This does not mean that we won’t even try. Nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and tourists who love exploring new places can visit pink lakes all over the world. While most of these lakes owe their colour to high salt content, others are in different shades of pink due to microscopic red algae. The sheer beauty of these pink lakes is so mesmerizing that you will surely want to back come for more. Here are 13 pink lakes in the world that are worth visiting:

1. Lake Hillier

Lake Hillier

Set in the heart of the Middle Island in Australia, Lake Hillier is one of the most beautiful pink lakes in the world! The best part is that its water is not only pink within the lake but also in a glass of water. How cool is that? You can plan a vacation in Australia with a reputed travel company and visit Lake Hillier any time of the year.

2. Lake MacDonnell

Another pink-coloured lake in Australia that will make you appreciate nature and its wonders is Lake Macdonnell. It is one of the reasons behind South Australia’s booming tourism, so setting aside a day to visit this pink lake should be on your itinerary too! Also known as the pink and blue lake, reaching Lake Macdonnell is an adventure on its own. You can take a taxi or hire a private car to drive along a dirt track that leads to Lake Macdonnell or Port Sinclair Pink Lake.

3. Pink Lake Victoria

By now, it must be quite evident to you that Australia has a thing for pink lakes. Another one on this list is Pink Lake in Victoria. This is a small salty pink lake that you can easily reach via road because its location is right on the Western Highway in Australia. Like all other lakes that have a dusty rose hue, the main reason behind its natural beauty is microscopic algae. So, you can marvel at the beauty of this natural lake on your next trip to the land Down Under.

4. Lake Bumbunga

Only two hours from Adelaide, there is a saltwater lake located in a farming locality called Lake Bumbunga. The literal meaning of this pink lake’s name is “lake of rain” in the indigenous language. A unique feature of this area is that you can view a number of sculptures made by civil environmentalists. If you have booked a world tour package with Australia on your itinerary, then make sure to visit this lake.

5. Hutt Lagoon

Among the various pink lakes in Australia, there is a lagoon giving them a run for their money. The saltwater fed in the Hutt Lagoon is fed by the river with the same name. This lagoon is pink in colour due to the pink algae that become a part of this lake from the Indian Ocean. The scope of enjoying the outdoors near this region is possible as there are several campsites nearby.

6. Lake Retba

Stepping away from the southern hemisphere, we have a pink lake in Senegal called Lake Retba or Lac Rose. An interesting fact about this pink lake is that its water has 40% salt content which is almost the same as the Dead Sea in Israel! If you are planning to visit this beautiful country and wish to take a peek at this lake, then the best time to do so would be in the dry season (November to June). This is the right time to soak in the magenta hues of Lake Retba while sitting in terracotta-coloured dunes.

7. Dusty Rose Lake

Canada has a pink lake in British Columbia called Dusty Rose Lake which is a must-visit tourist destination for tourists. The pinkish lavender colour of this lake comes from the surrounding area and glacial waters. There is no form of life within this lake because it is devoid of oxygen (anoxia). If you are touring around Canada and have already visited one of the biggest waterfalls in the world, the Niagara Falls, then you should also take out some time to visit this pink lake. Since Dusty Rose Lake is located in a remote part of Tweedsmuir Park, you might need some assistance from the locals to find it.

8. Laguna Colorada

Laguna Colorada gets its pink colour from various elements like borax, red mineral sentiments, and microscopic red algae. It is located within Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve in Bolivia and is also called the Red Lagoon by the locals. You can plan a day trip or set up a camp at this national reserve and spend some quality time with your family and friends near this pink lake.

9. Quairading Pink Lake

Pink Lake

Considered a local phenomenon, Quairading Pink Lake is another treasure in Australia that you should visit on your next vacation. During the summer months of December, January and February, evaporation takes place rapidly which inevitably brings up the salt in this lake. As a result, the colour of this lake turns pink. Quairading Pink Lake does not remain pink throughout the year, so it is recommended to plan your visit.

10. Lake Natron

One of the most peaceful lake areas in Africa is near Lake Natron without a doubt. The serene environment around this pink lake is one of the main reasons why tourists visit it quite often. It is a saltwater soda lake in the Great Rift Valley, Tanzania with a welcoming aura that is simply irresistible. Since this lake is extremely alkaline, stepping into can cause you some serious burns! So, make sure you enjoy its pinkish hues from a safe distance.

11. Lake Tuz

When we talk about hypersaline lakes, then Lake Tuz needs to be talked about! Not only is this saltwater lake known for its alkalinity but also for its sheer size of 1,665 square km surface area. Originally known as Tatta, the locals prefer calling it Tuz Golu which literally translates to “salt lake”. Only an hour away from the popular city of Cappadocia, Lake Tuz should be a part of your itinerary while vacationing in Turkey.

12. Las Salinas De Torrevieja

Think of a pink lake where you can swim to your heart’s content and gaze at pink flamingos flocking by. Las Salinas De Torrevieja is a natural saltwater lake in Valencia, Spain that will make your vacation simply memorable. Although flowering is rare in this region, you can see saladillas (lavender), groundsel and even orchids (collina) bloom for a short period of time. It is also believed by the local population that the water of this pink lake can cure skin and lung diseases!

13. Masazir Lake

This pink lake in Azerbaijan is known to have high levels of salt because extensive mining has been done around it for the past 200 years. Situated in Qaradag region, very close to Baku, this saltwater lake can be easily reached via taxi, bus, etc. Over time, the colour of this lake has become so rich that it almost feels like you have landed on Mars!

Visiting one or more of these pink lakes will be a unique travel experience that you must try out as soon as possible. Plan your travel itinerary and enjoy a marvellous vacation in the pink hues of these lakes!
