This past week, on the latest episode of our podcast and video series ‘Travel, Explore, Celebrate Life’, my co-founder and Veena World’s Chief Product Officer, Sunila Patil, and I had a blast discussing a destination that’s close to our hearts New Zealand. Often called an Instagrammer's paradise, this country is known for its stunning landscapes, warm-hearted locals, and endless opportunities for adventure. My last trip to New Zealand was in 2019, and even after all this time, I can still say that New Zealand offers something unique at every turn. Let’s dive into what makes this country so special.
The Adventure Capital of the World
If there's one thing New Zealand does best, it’s adventure. And when it comes to thrill-seekers, the country doesn’t disappoint. Fun fact: New Zealand is the birthplace of modern bungee jumping! Queenstown, on the South Island, is where it all started. There’s something thrilling about standing on the edge of a platform, whether it’s at the ledge overlooking the city or the historic Kawarau Bridge, and jumping off into the abyss. For the braver souls, the Kawarau jump even offers an option to dip into the river talk about making a splash!
Adventure in Queenstown goes way beyond just bungee jumping. For a different kind of adrenaline rush, how about skydiving? Imagine freefalling from 15,000 feet with the Southern Alps as your backdrop. Or, if you prefer your adventures on the water, jet boating on the Kawarau and Shotover rivers is a great way to feel the wind in your hair as you speed through the shallow waters. And here’s a tip: if your skydive gets cancelled because of weather, try river rafting instead rough weather makes for even more exciting rapids.
Over on the North Island, Rotorua has its own share of adventures, and it’s home to a fun activity called Zorbing. You will tumble down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball filled with water. It’s hilarious to do and even more fun to watch! Rotorua also has natural hot pools, thanks to the region’s geothermal activity, where you can soak and relax after a day of adventuring. Oh, and heli-skiing? Yep, that’s an option too. A helicopter whisks you up to remote peaks in the Southern Alps where you can ski or snowboard down untouched snow. Now that’s taking skiing to the next level!
Geothermal Wonders of Rotorua
Rotorua is a hotbed of geothermal activity, and that’s not just a figure of speech. Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the region is teeming with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and even active volcanoes. Fun fact: New Zealand's Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often rated among the best day hikes in the world. And guess what? You get to trek across an active volcanic crater talk about walking on the wild side!
If walking over a volcano isn’t enough, how about flying over one? One of the most exhilarating experiences Rotorua offers is a helicopter ride over an active volcano, where you can watch white smoke rise from the crater below. It’s a sight that really puts Earth’s raw power into perspective. Rotorua’s Kaituna River also boasts the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall, the seven-metre Tutea Falls. Rafting down this river is like taking on Mother Nature herself, but with a paddle!
Aotearoa: Embracing the Maori Culture
New Zealand is deeply rooted in Maori culture, which is vibrant and ever-present throughout the country. Aotearoa, the Maori name for New Zealand, translates to ‘the land of the long white cloud’. Fun fact: the Maori Haka, which is world-famous, thanks to New Zealand’s rugby team, was originally performed by warriors before going into battle. Today, it’s performed for a variety of reasons from welcoming guests to celebrating achievements.
In Rotorua, you can immerse yourself in Maori culture by experiencing a traditional Hangi meal. This feast is cooked using geothermal heat, which gives the food a distinctive flavour and connects you to the ancient traditions of the land. And don’t forget the Hongi, the traditional Maori greeting where you press noses and foreheads together to share the breath of life. It’s a powerful symbol of unity and respect. Visiting a Maori village in the North Island is like stepping back in time, and it’s a chance to see how this indigenous culture has shaped New Zealand’s identity.
A Photographer’s Dream
New Zealand is a playground for photographers, whether you are a pro or just snapping photos on your phone. Its landscapes are varied and stunning. Fun fact: there are more sheep than people in New Zealand about five sheep for every person! That means you are likely to encounter these woolly creatures as you explore the countryside.
In the North Island, you will find lush forests, rolling hills, and geothermal areas that seem straight out of a sci-fi movie. One particularly famous spot is Hobbiton in Matamata. Movie buffs will recognise it as the setting for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Walking through Hobbiton feels like you have stepped into Middle-Earth, with perfectly preserved hobbit holes and gardens waiting around every corner.
On the South Island, places like Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound offer dramatic fjords, towering cliffs, and roaring waterfalls. Pro tip: consider staying overnight on a boat in one of these fjords. Waking up to the stillness of the water and kayaking through the morning mist is an experience that sticks with you long after you leave.
When to Visit New Zealand
New Zealand is one of those rare places that can be enjoyed year-round. The best time to visit really depends on what you are looking to do. Spring (September to November) is ideal for nature lovers and garden enthusiasts, with blossoms everywhere you look.
Summer (December to February) is the peak tourist season with its long, sunny days. If you love outdoor activities and don’t mind a bit of company, this is the perfect time to explore. Autumn (March to May) brings cooler weather and spectacular foliage think golden hues in towns like Arrowtown and Wanaka. And for snow lovers, winter (June to August) is prime time for skiing and snowboarding in Queenstown and the Southern Alps. Plus, winter means incredible stargazing at one of New Zealand’s official dark sky reserves.
A Culinary Journey
If you are a foodie, New Zealand will definitely not disappoint. Fun fact: New Zealanders are passionate about their coffee, so be prepared to enjoy some of the best flat whites you have ever tasted. The cuisine is all about fresh, local ingredients, with lamb and seafood being particularly notable. The lamb here is incredibly tender and flavourful, while the seafood especially crayfish and oysters, comes straight from the ocean to your plate.
Wine lovers will also feel at home here. Central Otago is world-renowned for its Pinot Noir, and the Marlborough region is celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc. Visiting a winery for a tasting session is almost a must, and the scenic views of rolling vineyards only add to the experience.
One Trip is Never Enough
Whether you are into heart-pounding adventures, rich cultural experiences, or simply soaking in stunning landscapes, New Zealand has something for everyone. Each season brings new surprises, and every visit offers something unique to discover. So if you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for? One thing’s for sure one trip will never be enough.
