I have always been fond of Madhya Pradesh. The state, with its royal heritage, lip-smacking delicacies, and untouched natural beauty, offers a very enchanting time to the visitors. Last year, somewhere around mid-November, I visited my brother who was posted at the Jabalpur Cantonment for a short trip. Having heard about the beauty of this place from him, the urge of visiting this tourist place in Jabalpur just got stronger for me. And finally, when I landed there, the first impression of the city made a place in my heart.
Just to give you an overview, Jabalpur is one of the major cities in Madhya Pradesh that is not only bestowed with happening city life but also with exquisite natural beauty. Not to forget, the city also has a history that will surely intrigue the visitors or at least to say, I was intrigued.
Now for an honest confession - I have always been a water baby. The gushing sounds of the cascade, the sweet ripples, and the pleasant aura that waterfalls offer have different magic altogether. And, while in Jabalpur, Dhuandhar Falls has got to be in the list. Without any further ado, here’s my account on the amazing experience I had while visiting this cascading beauty.
1. The First Sight of Dhuandhar Falls
To say that I was mesmerised by the sight in front of me would be an understatement; I lost my heart to this place (sounds a little dramatic, but it is true). Located on the periphery of Narmada River in Bhedaghat, this waterfall in Jabalpur pours down from a height of approximately 98 feet i.e. 30 m and the view is extremely picturesque. The force of the water is quite strong and creates a misty ambience. If you must know, the Dhuandhar Falls is known as Smokey Cascade for the same reason. The plunge of the cascade is so strong that it can be heard from a pretty far-off distance. That got me even more excited.
There are viewing platforms constructed along the sides that allow for a better view of the waterfall. However, there’s a certain limit till where visitors can go; make sure of not crossing the railings. From the viewing platform, you can see a beautiful bed of white and grey marble rocks beneath the water that enriches the whitish colour of the waterfall even more. To me, the Dhuandhar Falls is nature’s miracle that has been very well preserved by the tourism department of the state. The exquisiteness of the cascade, the serenity in the aura, and the mystical sound not only makes it one of the best waterfalls in Jabalpur but also in India.
2. Things to Do in Jabalpur’s Smokey Waterfall
There are a few fun activities that visitors can take part in to make the trip even more memorable. As for me, I am a big fanatic of adventures, so I did it all!
2.1 Cable Car
I know, this may seem to be a little scary but the experience is completely worth it. The cable car is accessible from both the east and west side of the waterfall. It moves from one end of the waterfall to the other end; when I saw the view from atop, I was simply enthralled. For those who want to see the other side of Jabalpur’s Dhuandhar waterfall can take the ropeway available at Bhedaghat point. Also, there is a trip fee per person that costs approximately around INR 80-90.
2.2 Boat Ride
Next on the list, I took a thrilling boat ride on River Narmada during the sunset. The reason I chose the time of sunset was that the view during that time is breathtaking. As the sun starts to descend, the rays fall on the white marble rocks that give out beautiful hues of yellow. To me, that sight is the perfect backdrop for a romantic proposal. Anyway, it is a 6 km boat ride through narrow canyons that are guarded by cliffs elevating to a height of 100 feet. Frankly, a boat ride at the Dhuandhar Falls in Jabalpur is not to be missed.
Other than this, you can also go for a picnic along the riverside with your friends and family and spend a relaxing time there. I, unfortunately, didn’t have the time to do so but I did go for marble shopping. Many vendors sit along the riverside with handicrafts, ornaments, and statues that are fashioned out of marble. I also bought some quirky key chains and personalised nameplates. Just order it before going to falls; they will be ready by the time you are back.
3. Best Time to Visit the Smokey Falls in Jabalpur
In all honesty, the best time to visit the Dhuandhar Waterfall is during Sharad Poornima when the state celebrates the Narmada Mahotsav. You can search for Jabalpur tourism packages for the same. But, if you cannot make it at that time, I would suggest October to March. The months of April to May are extremely hot there and the monsoon months are pretty risky as the area experiences huge inflow of water.
4. Other Waterfalls near Jabalpur
I had also been to the Bhadbhada Waterfall in Jabalpur that is located around 45 minutes (via NH34) away from the Dhuandhar Falls. This cascade is based over the Gour River which is said to be one of the helping rivers of Narmada. The Bhadbhada Waterfall is complemented with black and brown rocks and beautiful gorges – a perfect sight for nature lovers. I have also heard a lot about Jabalpur’s Khandari Waterfall that is located in the Dumna Nature Reserve; sadly, I couldn’t visit the place this time.
Before I conclude, here are a few tips for visiting the Dhuandar waterfalls in Jabalpur:
- Don’t forget to take your sunglasses and cap even if the weather is cool and pleasant.
- There are no ATMs nearby the waterfall. So, carry enough cash in case you want to buy souvenirs from the marble shop or go for a cable/boat ride.
- There are a few small eateries and street food vendors near the waterfall. But, if you are extremely hygiene conscious or have a kid with you, carry your food and water.
- Very important tip – Please be careful while clicking pictures of the waterfall, taking selfies, and all. Make sure that you do not cross the railings of the viewing platforms.
- Wear comfortable shoes or sports shoes when you are visiting this or any other waterfall in Jabalpur.
My trip to Jabalpur, as a whole, was pretty amazing. There are a lot of places for sightseeing in Jabalpur; however, Dhuandhar Falls is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city. The fact that I got to spend some time with my brother while visiting it was a big bonus for me!
