Jomsom gets its name from the Tibetan word “Dzong Sampa”, which essentially translates to “New Fort”.  King Thang Mig Chen of Thini had established the fort for the purpose of monitoring the movement of people on the north-south trade route. The fort and the town were built near this trade route. The locals eventually began to call the place Dzong Sampa, and tourists visiting the region started to pronounce “Jomsom”.
