Amman travel must be a part of your Jordan tour itinerary, especially if you have an interest in art, culture and history. Even though it’s a pretty modern urban hub, you will find evidence of its much older past throughout the city. The historical essence of this bustling Middle Eastern city can be found where ancient Ammonite ruins sit beside a weathered Roman amphitheatre. Amman tourism is characterized by the city's blue-domed mosques, spice-scented markets, mouth-watering cuisine, and lively street art. The people of Amman are largely well-educated, multi-denominational, multi-cultural and quite hospitable. They take pride in showing their fascinating city to the visitors.
Experience the Best of Amman
Your Amman trip should include the following attractions.
The Citadel: The area known as the Citadel lies on the peak of Jebel Al Qala’a, an L-shaped hill overlooking the old town of Amman. This site includes the much popular Umayyad Palace, Temple of Hercules, and also a 1700-meter wall tracing back to the Bronze Age, and hence is a part of most Amman holiday tour packages. Umayyad Palace includes an impressive series of historical buildings that are believed to be the work of Umayyad Arabs dating from about AD 720. The palace was once home to the governor of Amman. The most intact of the buildings on the site is the hall shaped like a cross, mirroring the Byzantine church over which it was built. The Temple of Hercules at the Citadel is a major highlight of the Amman tour. The temple was built by the Romans and attracts tourists from near and far to view the glorious hand that is believed to be the hand of a large of Hercules. This hand is a symbol of the strength of the Roman hero.
Roman Theatre: Booking Amman tourism packages would give you the chance to visit this impressive remnant of Roman Philadelphia. This beautifully restored theatre is cut into the northern side of a hill, and has a seating capacity of about six thousand. The theatre is believed to be originally built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Antoninus Pius. At the Roman Theatre, you will find the restored Odeon on the east side of the forum which could accommodate around 500 spectators. Here you can also check out a gorgeous ornamental fountain, Nymphaeum, which was built in 191 AD and is dedicated to water nymphs.
Duke’s Diwan: After booking Amman travel packages, tourists are quite likely to visit this historic townhouse that was built in 1924. It beautifully showcases the history, heritage, culture and art of Jordon. Duke’s Diwan has a wide variety of photographs, old furniture, books, antiques, documents and several other memoirs on display. These memoirs shall provide you with a glimpse of a bygone age.
Jordan Museum: One of the best sightseeing experiences on your Amman trip would surely include a visit to the Jordan Museum. This museum preserves the rich cultural heritage of the country and provides a glimpse of its history through rare archaeological artefacts, a few of them being over 9,000 years old. The 9,000-year-old Ain Ghazal statues at the Jordan Museum are large figures made from lime plaster and reed and are from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic C Period. They are among the earliest known statues of the human form. At the Jordan Museum, you will find the Copper Scroll, which is a part of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls. It is the only one of the Dead Sea Scrolls that is not written on parchment or papyrus but on metal. The largest part of the Jordan Museum is dedicated to archaeological findings within the kingdom and includes displays that highlight the culture and history of the nation, from the prehistoric period to the Islamic Period.
Best Time to Visit Amman
The ideal time to go on an Amman Tour would be from March to May. This is when spring sets in Jordon, and hence the temperature here is quite moderate and pleasant. It is perfect for sightseeing and admiring the lush green splendour of the city. Moderate summers that start in June and continue till the end of September would also be a good time for planning your trip.
