Presenting the Musei Subacuatico de Arte, or what is popularly known as MUSA, Cancun’s underwater museum is arguably the largest museum of its kind in the whole world. Visiting this place is no less than an adventure. MUSA is the result of the amazing vision of Jaime Gonzalez Kant and British sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor. Both of them want to protect the local reef by providing divers with a special place to explore Cancun's pristine waters. And so, construction begin in 2009, and the museum opened in just a year. Today, the museum with its over 500 sculptures in the 2 sections of the Cancun National Marine Park welcomes nearly 200000 visitors each year.
All of these sculptures are anchored to the seafloor and unlike traditional museums, the sculptures change over time at this museum. This is because with time, they become an integral part of the aquatic environment and home to diverse plant and marine species. One of the most popular installations here is "The Silent Evolution" by MUSA founder Jason Taylor. It contains nearly 450 life-size figures grouped in ways that suggest the harmonious coexistence of humanity. There is also the 'Anthropocene', a real submerged Volkswagen Beetle near Mancones Reef. The exterior of the car is covered with various plants, and the interior of the car is home to a variety of underwater creatures.
