Destinations weddings are NOT expensive

8 mins. read

Published in the Sunday Indian Express Magazine - Eye on 14 July, 2024

Destination weddings can often be more economical than traditional ceremonies due to their typically smaller guest lists and bundled venue packages

I got married in 2021. Heta and I like many others, had dreamed of a beautiful destination wedding. Add to that, the super large events team at Veena World also wanted to have an ‘in-house’ destination wedding to plan. So it was always on the cards. However, the pandemic threw a wrench in our plans, and we opted for a smaller, local ceremony here in Mumbai. It was no doubt memorable and beautiful. But today, I’m here to tell you about destination weddings and to also convince you that destinations weddings are in fact more affordable that you might think!

So imagine, you or your loved one exchanging wedding vows under the vibrant colours of a Rajasthani sunset or against the serene backdrop of Kerala's backwaters. Destination weddings in India are a growing trend that’s here to stay, offering couples a chance to celebrate their love story in some of the world's most enchanting locations. However, there’s a prevailing myth that these fairy-tale weddings come with a hefty price- tag, that may not always be true. So let's dive into the world of Indian destination weddings and uncover how they can be both magical and budget-friendly.

Busting the Myth: Destination Weddings Are NOT Expensive

The notion that destination weddings are exorbitantly expensive is widespread but not entirely accurate. While it's true that a wedding anywhere can rack up costs, it doesn't have to break the bank. In fact, destination weddings can often be more economical than traditional ceremonies due to their typically smaller guest lists and bundled venue packages.

For example, a wedding in Rajasthan's stunning palaces might sound lavish, but many venues offer all-inclusive packages that can end up costing less than hosting a large wedding in a metropolitan city like Mumbai or Delhi. Similarly, choosing an off-season date can significantly reduce expenses as venues and vendors are more likely to offer discounts.

How to Start Planning a Destination Wedding

As our events team always says, planning a destination wedding begins with choosing the right date and envisioning your dream ceremony. The first step is to pick a date that works for you, your partner, and your closest family and friends. Consider the season and weather conditions of your desired destination to ensure a comfortable and beautiful setting.

Research is the key  start by exploring various locations and their wedding offerings. Websites of popular venues are a treasure trove of information, showcasing the unique features, amenities, and packages each place provides. Dive into travel blogs and wedding forums where couples share their personal experiences, tips, and reviews about different destinations. These firsthand accounts can provide valuable insights into what to expect and how to prepare.

Consider the overall vibe and setting you want for your wedding. Are you dreaming of a royal affair in a grand palace, a laid-back beach ceremony, or a rustic celebration in the mountains? Each location offers distinct advantages and can influence the style and theme of your wedding. Think about accessibility for your guests, the local culture, and any special attractions that could make your wedding even more memorable.

How to Pick a Theme

The theme of your wedding sets the tone for the entire event. India, with its rich cultural background, offers a plethora of themes to choose from. Beach ceremonies in Goa, rustic hilltop vows in Shimla, royal weddings in Jaipur or Udaipur are just a few options.

When selecting a theme, consider what best reflects your personalities as a couple. Are you both history buffs? A royal theme with traditional attire and palatial decor could be perfect. Nature lovers? A beach or mountain wedding with eco-friendly decorations might be ideal. Let the destination guide your theme-the cultural and natural backdrop will enhance the overall aesthetic.

How to Decide on a Budget

Setting a budget is one of the most crucial steps in planning a wedding. Start by identifying the major expenses: venue, travel, accommodation, catering, and decor. Allocate a portion of your budget to each category based on its importance to you.

For instance, if the venue is a priority, you might choose a less expensive catering option. Always leave a buffer for unexpected costs - about 10% of your total budget. Negotiating with vendors and seeking out package deals can also help keep expenses under control. A sample budget for a destination wedding in India might look like this: - Venue and Decor: 40% - Travel and Accommodation: 30% - Catering: 20% - Miscellaneous (Entertainment, Photography, etc.): 10%.

Things to Keep in Mind

Planning a destination wedding involves several logistical considerations. Guest management is crucial - send out ‘save-the-dates’ early and provide detailed information about travel and accommodation. Weather is another key factor. Research the best time to visit your chosen destination to avoid extreme weather conditions.

Decide whether to hire local vendors or bring your own. Local vendors can offer insights and connections that out-of-town vendors might lack, often at a lower cost. Additionally, be mindful of regional customs and traditions that could influence your wedding plans, ensuring your celebration respects and incorporates local culture.

Destination Suggestions

India is a treasure trove of picturesque wedding destinations. Here are some top picks:

  1. Udaipur: Known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur offers regal palaces and serene lakesides, perfect for a royal wedding.
  2. Goa: Famous for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, Goa is ideal for couples looking for a relaxed yet lively wedding atmosphere.
  3. Jaipur: The Pink City, with its majestic forts and palaces, provides a stunning backdrop for a traditional Indian wedding.
  4. Kerala: The tranquil backwaters and lush greenery of Kerala offer a serene setting for an intimate and nature-inspired wedding.
  5. Shimla: Nestled in the Himalayas, Shimla's cool climate and scenic beauty make it a perfect choice for a romantic mountain wedding.

For those seeking something offbeat, consider locations like Jodhpur, with its desert charm, or Alleppey, known for its houseboat weddings on Kerala’s backwaters.

To sum up, destination weddings in India combine the allure of exotic locales with the intimacy of a close-knit celebration. By busting the myth of high costs, starting your planning early, and keeping a keen eye on budget and logistics, you can craft a wedding that is both enchanting and economical.
