Petra is almost a classic textbook story of a fabled city, known far and wide as the rose-red city. It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most cherished treasures of the world.

Once the capital of the Nabataean Arabs, the city of Petra is one of the most sought-after archaeological sites in the world. Get to know more about Petra before booking your tour packages

The ancient city of Petra, originally known a Raqmu, is located in the southern part of Jordan. Petra lies on the slope of Jabal Al-Madbah Mountain which is a source of admiration for visitors on tours to Petra. Although the exact origin of this city is not known, it is believed to have come into existence as early as 9,000 BC and was established as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom in the 4th century BC. The Romans took over the city in 106 AD and in the coming ages, the city continued to decline, and it was eventually abandoned. It kept hidden from the world when it was rediscovered in 1812 by Johann Ludwig Burckhardt who was a Swiss traveller, geographer, and orientalist.

Petra can be reached through a 1.2-kilometre-long gorge called Siq which provides the perfect backdrop to tourists who come here to explore the city on Petra tour packages, which can be easily booked online. One of the highlights on a trip to Petra is the Al-Khazaneh or the Treasury which was voted in 2007 as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The skilful Nabataeans built a fully functional water system which contributed significantly to the rise of the city. Tours to Petra encapsulate all these marvellous aspects of Petra.

Experience the destination

On all of your tours to Petra, the surroundings will captivate you, way before you reach the actual city. A gorge, the typical rugged desert terrain, and faint glimpses of a once prosperous city make you hold your breath in anticipation. The way you can reach Petra is primordial and can be reached either on foot or atop the back of a camel, donkey or horse. But to describe Petra tours as just historical ones would be to touch upon just one aspect of complete Petra tour packages.

People avail Petra packages online not just to see its architectural ingenuity but also to experience a nomadic culture. As you enter the long, narrow entrance called Siq, you cannot help but wonder about what lies beyond those massive rocks. And what lies beyond is the Al-Khazaneh or the Treasury which is truly a treasure for the entire world. Petra vacation packages don’t end at the rose-coloured city walls as there are ample opportunities in the nearby town of Wadi Musa. Things to Do in Petra

There are so many things to do on a trip to Petra that it is impossible to squeeze them all in one of the Petra vacation packages. However, here are a few things that you shouldn’t miss.

• Bab Al Siq:

It is Arabic for the gateway to the ‘Siq’. The highlight of the gateway is the squared Djinn blocks that have been carved out from a rock. There’s an Obelisk Tomb and four pyramids above it represent the five people buried here.

• Siq:

The long, narrow, serpentine passageway leads one to the Ancient City and is characterized by numerous spiritual sites. The Siq starts at a bridge beside a dam. The modern dam was constructed over an ancient one built by the Nabataeans in AD 50 and its purpose was to stop floodwaters from Wadi Musa from entering the city.

• Al Khazaneh or The Treasury:

After you have passed the Siq, it opens to a magnificent façade which is known as Al Khazaneh or The Treasury. The purpose of the Treasury is not clear but legend has it that it contains the treasures of a pharaoh. But the real treasure is the interiors of the site with intricate and ornate statues and figurines.

• The Street of Facades:

Get ready to be absolutely bowled over at the sight of the Street of Facades. Here, there are rows and rows of monumental Nabataean tombs that have been skilfully carved into the cliff, ornamented by grindstones.

• The High Place of Sacrifice:

The place gets its name from the ritualistic animal sacrifices that were done here and is built atop Jebel Madbah Mountain with built-in drains to drain out the blood. This place shouldn’t be missed on Petra Vacation packages for the jaw-dropping views of the Ancient City.

• The Theatre:

The ingenuity of the Nabataeans is at display here too with this spectacular theatre, which was carved out of a rock. It had an original capacity of about 3000 in 45 rows of seats, with three horizontal sections separated by two corridors.

• Monastery:

Most monasteries are usually tucked far away from human settlements and it is no different here in Petra. Almost hidden by high hills, the Monastery is believed to have been built in the 3rd century BCE and was used for sacred ceremonies. Sometime during the ensuing centuries, it was also used as a church, depicted by the several crosses found here.

• Little Petra:

Also known as Siq al-Barid, Little Petra is located north of the Ancient City and is believed to have been built around 1st century BC. This archaeological site consists of a temple flanked by four triclinia and was probably used as a rest house for travellers. The Painted House, true to its name, has numerous frescoes decorated and painted elaborately.

Apart from the above, in the Ancient City, the Urn Tomb (the Court), the Silk Tomb, the Corinthian Tomb, the Palace Tomb, the Colonnaded Street, the Sextius Florentinus, the Winged Lions Temple, etc are all worthy of inclusion in all Petra holiday packages.
