Get to know more about Beijing before booking your tour packages

Beijing is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China. It was earlier known as Peking and is the third most populous city in the world as well as the most populous capital city. Beijing is the seat of Chinese governance, diplomacy, and culture. This ancient city beautifully juxtaposes a 3000-year old historical essence with modernity as the city is also home to the greatest number of Fortune 500 companies in the world.

China has been ruled by many dynasties, most notably the Qing and Ming dynasties. The foundation for the Republic of China was established after a prolonged and intense struggle. A revolution and civil war later, the communist revolutionary Mao Zedong declared the creation of The People’s Republic of China in 1949. He was the one to rename the capital as Beijing.

Chinese is the most widely spoken language here. An important aspect of most Beijing tour packages from India is, of course, the Chinese cuisine, which is renowned all over the world, with many countries adding their own distinct flavours to the authentic Chinese ones.

Experience Beijing

When you opt for one of the Beijing city tour packages online from Veena World, you will be amazed to see the layers peeling off to reveal many magnificent nuggets. UNESCO World Heritage sites, traditional Chinese buildings housed in Hutongs (narrow alleys or streets), spectacular gardens, numerous universities, and research centres - all add to create a city that embraces all aspects of life.

Beijing is surrounded by both mountains and plains with major rivers such as the Chaobai, Yongding, and Juma flowing through its heart. The wealthy dynasties that ruled China over the ages have given the city a signature architectural style which is evident in the many historical and ornate buildings that you will visit with your Beijing tour packages from India. The architecture of the city can be broadly classified into the traditional imperial style, the uber-chic modernist, and the 'Sino-Sov' style which refers to boxy-type buildings. With more and more Global companies making their presence felt in Beijing, the traditional hutongs and buildings are slowly giving way to high-rises. On your Beijing tourism expedition, you can often see the contrasting buildings standing together.

Things to Do in Beijing

When you pick an online Beijing tour package from Veena World to experience Beijing tourism, you can rest assured that your Beijing holiday package will include only the best and the most relevant tourist places for a memorable holiday in Beijing.

To make things easier, here is a list of the most famous places to visit in Beijing and Beijing tourist attractions that you can include in your Beijing city tour package for a wholesome visit:

• The Great Wall of China:

The Great Wall of China is arguably the most famous tourist attraction in Beijing. Such is the magnanimity of this structure that it is said to be visible from space as well. The Great Wall of China leaves you speechless at first and then it embraces you with a feeling of awe.

You will be surprised to know that the Great Wall of China is not one single wall, but a series of different sections. Some of the sections of this great wall were built way back in the 7th century BC. The wall was constructed by many dynasties over the ages, primarily to guard the northern frontier of the country. The dimensions of the wall are of gigantic proportions, stretching from Liaodong in the east to Lop Lake in the west, from the present-day Sino-Russian border in the north to Tao River in the south. An archaeological survey has concluded that the entire length of the wall measures a staggering 21,196 km, a stellar example of the Chinese architectural advancement in those days.

A hike on the great wall is a triumph of human endurance and could prove to be a major bragging point. Experience the great wall at night at the Simatai section of the wall. Take a moment to soak in the lit-up stretches of the wall at night with the Gubei Water Town below sleeping away peacefully. Stars look down on the great wall from space, so why not look up to them from the great wall? You can camp at the Jiankou section of the wall, spend the night stargazing and listening to the silence surrounding this megalith.

• The Forbidden City:

Anything forbidden makes it more intriguing and makes you want to explore it even more. And that is the reason why the Forbidden City piques the interest. Protected and enclosed by high walls, the Forbidden City is Beijing’s best-kept secret. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is essentially a citadel that houses China’s largest and best-preserved collection of ancient buildings. The citadel was home to two imperial dynasties that preferred to remain reclusive at times. It was built between 1406 and 1420 by the Ming emperor Yongle, a gigantic project that employed thousands of labourers and craftsmen. This secretive maze of structures was surrounded by four huge walls. It would be ideal to keep a full day for the Forbidden City in your Beijing city tour package for exploring the place to the fullest. Marvel at the ceremonial halls, parade grounds, never-ending courtyards, imperial gardens, and magnificent gates. The many galleries here provide information about the Forbidden City to the visitors.

• Tiananmen Square:

This stone-paved square has immortalized its name in the annals of not only Chinese history but also of the world. It is the site of a colossal human tragedy when the Chinese army used force on pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989 which resulted in the loss of many lives. If you have the time, witness the daily flag-raising ceremony at sunrise, performed by a troop of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers marching at precisely 108 paces per minute, 75 cm per pace. This place is also the final resting place for Communist leader Mao Zedong.

• The Bell Tower:

Hutongs are traditional Chinese alleyways and structures that are restrained and generally boxy looking. The Bell Tower houses a giant copper bell, weighing approximately 60 tonnes, and was Beijing's official timekeeper for many imperial reigns.

• Temple of Heaven Park:

Once a private imperial temple complex, this methodical Confucian-designed ‘Temple of Heaven’ was reserved for the emperor who performed sacred rites and rituals here. It was also the site for several religious and state ceremonies. The temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor who also built the Forbidden City. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar are some of the attractions at the complex. But the main attraction for the visitors is the spectacular park surrounding the complex, which spreads over 267 hectares.

Best Time to Visit Beijing

Summers could be very hot in Beijing and are best avoided. The best time to visit this city is from March to May and from September to October i.e. the spring and autumn months when the weather is perfect for indulging in some Beijing tourism and there are pretty fall colours to be seen all around. Winters in Beijing are characterized by cold temperatures and sometimes even snow.
