Sikkim was once under the rule of the Chogyals who used to reign over Ladakh as well. According to some local legends, there was a Sikkimese Princess, Pende Ongmoo, who deceived one of the Chogyals and escaped. She was murdered by the followers of Chador Namgyal, the Chogyal she overthrew, after which, her palace was turned into a monastery.
